Steer was a compositor and the founder & president of the British Typographers Guild when he wrote this c 1935. There are chapters on design & layout in printing, training the mind to visualise, the limelight of the layout, the development of calligraphy, the romance of type design, the principles of type selection, lettering for layouts, the historic styles of ornament, the decorative use of printers’ rules, type & copy calculations, the details of fine typography, dramatising the advertiser's message, choosing the right paper, the technique of pictorial representation, how to choose colour in typography, the scope of the book typographer, the work of the commercial typographer. Many vignette illustrations throughout, and red-and-black illustrations to the rear. About five hundred typefaces and a series of thirty six type calculation charts are shown.
