Magazine on History / Theory / Criticism of Design. Tad Takano was born in Washington and enrolled in 1948 at Moholy-Nagy’s ‘New Bauhaus’ in Chicago. Takano worked at various studios before becoming Professor to teach Communication Design at University of Illinois at Chicago: School of Art and Design. Victor Margolin was a professor of Art and Design History and editor of Design Issues at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) from 1982 until his retirement in 2005. In 1981, Margolin earned his PhD in design history at the Union Institute in Cincinnati, OH. According to Margolin, this was the first doctorate in the history of design ever conferred in the United States. His dissertation examined the lives of three influential Bauhaus and Russian constructivist graphic designers from the early twentieth century. In 1982, the same year he began teaching at UIC, Margolin and several other colleagues started Design Issues, a journal dedicated to the academic study of design. Margolin served as editor for the first three years and thereafter co-editor for the duration of his academic career.  The advisory board of this publication includes: Saul Bass, Ivan Chermayeff, Alvin Eisenman, Frank Fox, John Heskett, John Massey, Eckhardt Neumann, Ruedi Ruegg, Massimo Vignelli, Penny Sparke, among others.
